CONSTRUCTION, DESIGN AND ENGINEERING, BUILDING STRUCTURES, PROJECT MANAGEMENT
K-Kampus is a new, large and complex office building in Helsinki, covering almost the entire block. Kesko Corporation will use 2/3 of the space. 1/3 is still open for tenant. Approximately 50 companies have been involved with planning, design and construction work on the project. By April, both interior and exterior work should be finished.
For VMT Steel, the project started in January 2017 when they signed a contract with the Finnish insurance company Varma. VMT Steel became responsible of manufacturing and installing building constructions, as well as installing 57,000 square meters of concrete elements. In May of the same year, the production of steel structures began and in September the installation work started. In total, 2000 tons of basic frame structures and 1,000 tons of secondary structures were produced and installed. Construction was completed in three stages.
The building design was mainly done by Ramboll Finland Oy. However, VMT Steel designed steel staircases that pass through the buildings` two large atriums - both 26 meters in height. The stairs were first lifted to the first floor of the atrium with a crane. From there they were lifted one-by-one to the highest floor using a winch, where they were welded in place. The staircases had to be installed starting from the top. Additionally, VMT Steel designed, executed and installed a spiral staircase that leads from the parking floor to the second floor. We have been known for our ability to produce a large and complex spiral staircases since the construction of Tapiola's head office in 2008.
Within the company, 30 people, including designers, production workers, installers, and site managers, were engaged with the K-Kampus project. In total, 75,000 working hours were invested in this project. Although the contract work in K-Kampus largely ends in April, smaller works and orders are added until the end of 2019. We are well known among our partners for our in-group flexibility and operability - we can design, produce and install. Although it was the largest project in VMT Steel's history, everything proceeded as planned.
